I interpreted that as either a failure of marketing message, or of them subconsciously acknowledging that the appeal of Nintendoland is hard to understand, even if the package itself is a fun enough game.

It strikes me as denial. "People love the game! They just can't find the words to convince their friends to play it!"

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad game at all. What I'm pointing out is that he's essentially blaming the customers for not convincing their friends to play it. That seems delusional to me at best. Folks certainly haven't had difficulty explaining how interesting other titles, including Nintendo titles, are. Occam's Razor would say that the game simply doesn't have as much appeal to the masses as Nintendo believes it does. In light of that data, I would cop to that and move on, no subconsciousness necessary.
