To the peeps squabbleing....
Mortal Kombat was a controversial game because it showed blood on the Genesis version, and no blood on the SNES version. It was a really popular game in the arcade (to my memory), and a modestly popular game on consoles. Killer Instinct was just as big on arcades (to my memory) if not bigger, but as a console game it was a lot more talked about.
If VGC numbers put KI above MK, I believe it. Post 16-bit though, both franchises kinda fell apart. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom (and others) managed to hold popularity until their reboot this gen, but MK is a dying franchise, and Killer Instinct is basically already dead....The XBone game is a free download, not a full retail game. This could be to test the market, to see if they really want a new Killer Instinct, but still....sad.
SF is still the big 2D fighter franchise.

VGC didn't have old MK sales.

Like the other guy said, 2 was bigger. MK2 was the game that made MK.
Just like Street Fighter, SF2 was THE Street Fighter, the big one.
Still MK is a bigger franchise then Killer Instinct because KI is only 1 game, and a kind of remake for N64. MK has around a dozen different games.
