I will have to actually get together and hang out with actual friends in order to play this. Oh, the trauma.

I hope you are speaking for yourself, as not everyone is in the same situation you are.

I'm not even particularly looking forward to this game. That said, my view of it is this: not every multiplayer game needs online play, and in some cases its exclusion can have social benefits. Some games benefit from having both online and local, but I've found that, in those cases, even good friends that are capable of actually hanging out would choose online. A good local-only game, just like sharing a meal together or playing sports, encourages friends to plan real social gatherings around them and is a higly rewarding experience that you just can't get when playing by proxy.

Nintendo obviously knows this--the last few Mario Karts have shown they can design a competent online multiplayer game, so its omission from a game like this means they are making a statement in support of those great times.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
