Those animations and slow downs will get really old really fast, the whole combat looks kind of bland to me, just like God of War and most other 3rd person hack'n slash. I like the concept though, most games depicting this era are grand strategy where you command an army from an isometric perspective, being down in the action could be satisfying if done correctly, and the visuals are truly amazing.
As it stands though, it appears to be a kind of Gears of War with swords and javelins. Get rid of the QTE's! 
As far as variation goes, this is a cool addition to the One's library, regardless of what I feel about it as a game right now.
