You should look that up a bit more. Namco approached Nintendo with the offer not the other way around.
Namco was working on a prototype for a while and showed in to Nintendo. Nintendo said "hey this saves us some $$ and dev time and they did quite a good job".
So they put Sora and some of HAL to help/oversee development. I guess in exchange we'll be seeing some Namco cameos.
