It's basic communications. Know your audience and tailor your message accordingly.

If they weren't targeting their core gamers they should have known they would tune in anyway. It really begs the question wouldn't it have been far wiser to have had the media/tv deals etc. announced after? Instead of alienating their core customers from the get go. The backlash is the result of poor planning and oversights.

Which, surprise! is their fault.

See, this is the interesting question, to me.

What if Microsoft didn't want to target the core, what if the core are just standing in the way of a greater business vision they have? Did you know that Kinect Adventures sold 20m lifetime figures? You may think this is off topic, but MS is actually aiming to sell 1 BILLION xbox one's. They defo can't do that with the dedicated gamers in mind. They need to evolve. Yet at the same time the core gamer is at the heart of the industry media for the moment.

What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Does the mainstream get integrated into the industry first, or should MS hurdle over the core gamer first? Not sure.

Do you think xbox division execs are sitting in HQ at the moment looking at all the negativity surrounding their new product and saying to themselves it was a necessary blow to take to reach out to the expanding casual market?

Then there's the issue of exposure, how much of this new market was actually watching this? If they irked the core then did they succeed at reaching out the the casuals? Or did they really just not know their audience?

Early adopters can actually help advertise a product for you. They spend the most and help establish an early commercial environment thats viable for developers. Testing their loyalty seems reckless.

I guess its not something we can be totally sure of, in terms of who you focus on first. We'll have to see how it pans out. One option seems to have gotten a lot of negative feedback though and its hard to imagine the opposing scenario doing the same.

I mean basically, if you're selling something, you shouldnt be pissing off potential customers no matter who you're trying to reach.
