It's basic communications. Know your audience and tailor your message accordingly. If they weren't targeting their core gamers they should have known they would tune in anyway. It really begs the question wouldn't it have been far wiser to have had the media/tv deals etc. announced after? Instead of alienating their core customers from the get go. The backlash is the result of poor planning and oversights. Which, surprise! is their fault. |
See, this is the interesting question, to me.
What if Microsoft didn't want to target the core, what if the core are just standing in the way of a greater business vision they have? Did you know that Kinect Adventures sold 20m lifetime figures? You may think this is off topic, but MS is actually aiming to sell 1 BILLION xbox one's. They defo can't do that with the dedicated gamers in mind. They need to evolve. Yet at the same time the core gamer is at the heart of the industry media for the moment.
What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Does the mainstream get integrated into the industry first, or should MS hurdle over the core gamer first? Not sure.
