It's basic communications. Know your audience and tailor your message accordingly.
If they weren't targeting their core gamers they should have known they would tune in anyway. It really begs the question wouldn't it have been far wiser to have had the media/tv deals etc. announced after? Instead of alienating their core customers from the get go. The backlash is the result of poor planning and oversights.
Which, surprise! is their fault.
