The Wii appealed to both. Because the appeal was in the software. The "hardcore" loved the Mario Galaxy games and stuff like Muramasa and Smash Bros.

The console didn't last because Nintendo stopped making the correct games for it. Third party support didn't make the Wii explode in sales when it did either. It's the games that count, not who made them.
