Hopefully I don't get banned for saying thus but Wii was bought and sold purely as a gimmick/fad that was popular at the time. Much like Furby and Tickle Me Elmo it was something that people just had to have. Granted it lasted for quite some time due to the fact that it wasn't just a one trick pony, but when old people and 7 years olds are you're main consumer changes are you won't stick around for long. Old people die and 7 years olds become 13 years olds worth Xboxes and PlayStation 3s. As I've started before, almost no one who's once owned a Wii can tell you exactly where their console is.
I remember when Wii was brand new and my local news station had a raffle for a new Wii console. At that moment was when I said the machine would take off but wouldn't be considered a console of choice by gamers. Almost everyone who owns a Wii and had to buy it with their own money owns another console and Wii is the 2nd banana. I believe Nintendo themselves realized this and launched WiiU to preempt the moment Wii would have been totally forgotten by consumers. The company has always been innovative but they should have also pushed some of that innovation into new IPs and broader gaming experiences.

The WiiMote+Nunchuck is less of a gimmick then HD.

And 3D Sound (Surround Sound) is less of a gimmick then HD.

Same goes for 3D & Color & IMAX.

But the past gen Home Consoles (PS3/Wii/360) just wasn't that good anyways. Thank goodness for Virtual Console on PS3 & Wii.
