No one knew who the hell Monolith were until they made Xenoblade. Less buying upright, more opening studios, helping lead developers open studios. (Micheal Ancel if he leaves Ubisoft. Rayman.) Actually now that I think about it, Nintendo did this with a LOT of Square's former employees. Even the AlphaDream dudes are former Squaresoft. |
Not true. Xenosaga was when Monolith was one of the top JRPGs and I enjoyed it on my PS2. Problem is not too many people knew about it and its even worse off today.

Seems sales sharply declined after Xenosaga 1 though.

Monolith wasn't unknown before Xenoblade. Their PS1 game Xenogears was and is well regarded in JRPG circles.
Where you are right though is that picking up talent for cheap is a better idea than buying hot (and thus expensive) developers. Monolith was on the decline as their Xenosaga games underperformed. Originally planned to encompass six games, the saga was reduced to a trilogy due to disappointing sales.

Yes, very sad. One of my favorite franchises of the PS2 era.
