There's no way that the PS4 or 720 will retail for $299 after a year on the market, not knowing what we do about the hardware and what's bundled in the box.

Microsoft might manage a $399.99 price at launch if they didn't bundle Kinect 2.0 with it, but can you really see that happening..?

And Sony have recently said they're not going to make a huge loss on each unit sold. We're talking about an 8 core CPU, a GPU pushing 1.8TFlops, 8GB of GDDR5, a camera bar with 2 cameras and a Move/DS3 hybrid.

I really can't see either one of them releasing for less than $400, more like $499.99.

You're forgetting that Nintendo is also losing money on each Wii U sold. Only difference is that Sony is probably taking a loss because of the hardware (8gigs of GddR5 isn't cheap) and Nintendo because of it's tablet controller. And no they don't cost $20 to build.

Expenses related to the Wii U's touchscreen-equipped GamePad seem to be a major contributor to the Wii U's overall manufacturing costs as well. While individual GamePads won't be available at launch in North America, they will be sold a la carte in Japan for ¥13,440 (about $172), or more than half the total price of a system and GamePad together.

Microsoft will try to compensate this by bumping up the XBL subsription fee, and it they succeed then it won't be a problem for them to drop the price.

okay, keep dreaming. also doesnt xbox controllers retail for $50? by your logic they cost 1 third of the full package lol. now go find another intentionally inflated price to post here.

The Wii U controller cost around $80 of the total $228 it costs to manufacture a Wii U. $80 Is a huge chunk of the BOM when you consider that it's "amazing" GPU costs just $40. I am sure they can drop the price to about 199, but like with every console, it's just a matter of time before the ps4/ Nextbox are around $299 or cheaper as well. It might not be at launch, but it won't be in 6 years time either.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that you can't expect a console to flop just because the platform holder invested in high-end hardware. The ps3's BOM was about $900 when it launched for $600. A year later it was already 399 and two tyears later it was $299. In the end they all make the most from software and are willing to take a loss on the hardware if that means reaching their installbase goals. The only way any console will stay expensive is if people actually buy the thing. And yes Nintendo also invested in the hardware but, instead of a decent gpu ($40), cpu and ram ($6), they put all their eggs in the tablet controller basket.

where are you taking those numbers from? i think if much, the gamepad costs $70, but a regular controller would cost about 30 so it's not a big difference.

also ps4 was 499 at the cheapest model and that's the one that fell to 399 a year later. now don't expect the ps4 to retail for 299 before 2015 or you'll get dissapointed.

From CNN Money: http://money.cnn.com/video/technology/2013/03/18/t-ts-nintendo-wii-u-teardown.cnnmoney/index.html

And no a regular controller doesn't cost Sony or MS $30 to manufacture lol. Right now almost half the BOM costs of the Wii U are in the controller, which has a processor and all kind of stuff build in. It's also clear that Sony isn't planning on taking a huge loss with the ps4 as they did with the ps3 and like I said, it all depends on how many people will buy it at the launch price. If it sells millions and there is a short supply then I don't expect a pricedrop anyime soon. Sucks for consumers but Sony or MS won't be complaining. If they sell 30k units a week then you can expect pricedrops untill they do start selling because developers will pressure the platform holders. It always work like that or do you expect them to maintain a $500 pricepoint when nobody buys the consoles and they can't make any real money on software?
