After some dark years in the mid-2000s (especially with the Sonic franchise), SEGA has been improving substantially, making higher quality games, leveraging iconic properties, and even publishing a few new IP from outside developers. Platinum Games really delivered some creative titles, with Bayonetta being arguably the best hack'n'slash of the current generation, and MadWorld, Vanquish, and Anarchy Reigns are all interesting and fun in their own ways (Vanquish in particular is a fresh take on the third-person shooter).

Sonic has seen a dramatic reinvention. After the disaster that was Sonic '06, Sonic Team took the gameplay and the storytelling in a radically new direction, and while Unleashed had a mixed reception, the Day Stage gameplay became the foundation for two excellent titles, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. The franchise has also gotten a good boost from Sumo Digital's two Sonic Racing titles, which are really the only kart racers today that can hold a candle to Mario Kart.

But the biggest shift for SEGA as a company is the increased focus on digital titles on a wide variety of platforms (console, PC, mobile). Both remakes of older titles (NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 2, Guardian Heroes) and new IP (Renegade Ops, Hell Yeah) have helped SEGA to keep their lineup robust while reducing the amount of financial risk they take per title.
