The disc drive is a standard Matsushita Blu-ray disc drive.  Nothing special about the physical hardware.  The proprietary part is the firmware Matsushita developed for it.  The only real difference between the Wii U's Blu-ray disc drive a consumer Blu-ray disc drive is the firmware.

The 3DS has a sandboxed DS environment for DS games.  All the exploits of the original DS carried over so the 3DS is hacked only in the sandboxed DS environment.   The 3DS software environment has not yet been hacked.


So basically ... the Wii U has been hacked before the 3DS. Didn't see that coming.
