The difference is the E3 press conference will get picked up by the actual PRESS, not just people who already own Nintendo consoles and follow the gaming industry. This is one of the few times a year where gaming companies have a direct line to the world wide press to present and promote their upcoming products.
Do you think Apple would be as successful a company as it is if all they did was put out "podcasts" to people who already own their products?

Several logical missteps here. 1) assumption that Nintendo direct only goes out to Nintendo owners
2) (the bigger one) assuming that *announcements* of games are the only time that game gets any attention. They can make the announcements, and then feed the information to the media at a later time (the closed events), and still get much the same exposure.

It will get exposure to gaming sites like IGN and GI but E3 is where Nintendo could have shown off the WiiU to a massive audience comprised of more than just gamers. I still think this is a massive mistake.
