Yeah in high school I was always thinking stuff like "I'm going to go to MIT or Harvard and get a few doctorates since I love learning and why not!" As I got closer to choosing a university I started realizing how much freaking money that would be. So I changed my plans. This year I'm paying $28,000 a year at my University and next year I'll be paying half that. I would much rather take all that money I'm saving and apply it to something personal, like starting a company and getting a few patents. I figure this is the more conservative version of what Bill Gates and many others did, dropping out. At least if my company falls flat I'll still have a degree to fall back on.
