Well, Xbox 360 was the new system in 2006, and PS2 sold more...

And PS3 was the new system in 2007, and PS2 sold more, too...

Re: Xbox 360, it was supply constrained, meaning they couldn't get enough onto shelves to meet demand.  This is not an issue with the Wii U.

Re: PS3, it was $599 in 2006.  With the official (yet low ball) estimate of 3% inflation per year that would mean that the PS3 was around $720 in 2013 dollars.  That's more then double the price of the Wii U premium console.

Yes, it's a different ecconomic environment now, but the PS3 & Xbox continue to move healthy numbers of units every week while the Wii U largely continues to be ignored, even at a price in the same range as the others, around $300.
