You know what's going to sell your game? Making it interesting, innovative and enjoyable, taking care to show people footage ahead of time and marketing well.
Having a female or nonwhite character doesn't really affect the quality either way, so go for it if you like, but don't do that with the expectation that it is going to improve your game or make people love it.
