I don't think anything can guarantee a successful console. Consumers are so fickle and gamers tastes change all the time. The Dreamcast should have been in every gamer's home, but it wasn't. The PS3 should have landed on every PS2 owner's radar, but many switched to Xbox 360 before it even came out. The Gamecube had it all, but it didn't win. The Master System was the better console but the NES killed it and then the Genesis took half the market until Nintendo too it back with the SNES only to lose it to the PSX.

The only guarantee in the video game hardware business is that anything can happen.
