Main reason is easily because of no compelling software. Essentially there's a bunch of ports and the second 2D Mario game in a matter of months. Then there was a drought with almost no software. Nintendo was releasing 1 30 cent game a month, but none of those games are particularily good enough to hold peoples' interest more than a few days at most. Japan gets Earthbound, but it seems they are the only place, that game is VERY interesting and should be released everywhere to help ease the gap. Also given Earthbound's popularity, it might actually push some consoles to the hardcore Earthbound fans. Nintendo should have done at least one VC game a week at 30 cents.
