Funny world (as in strange, not haha).  Today my brother calls the house and gets in another heated argument with my father.  My father triggers this.  My father is worried about losing social security and paying the bills, and is on the Democrat side.  My brother calls.  Being in the military, he has turned anti-Democratic party.  Maybe he isn't pro-Republican or a Republican, but he echos a lot of the Tea Party stuff, and Fox News talks.  He talks about how he was lied to about his taxes not going up and the social security payroll tax reduction stimulus ending.  He rails how much the budget could be balanced if you just kick the welfare queens off the rolls,  and spoke about the person in a limo picking up a welfare check.  It goes on and on and on.   He also admits he is buried in credit card and student loan debt.  But he will fight on he says.  He is taking classes, and he won't come up short.  He will take responsibility for himself, and make it.

Here is the kicker:  He works for a defense company, I believe as a contractor.  He hates how the military is scapegoated for things and blamed for all the money ills.  He is going to face furloughs and days off without pay, due to the sequester coming down.  In short, he doesn't see himself in any way and form dependent on the government at all.  He is also retired military and I believe also is getting a pension of some sort.  He doesn't see himself dependent at all.  While crying autonomy and not taking care of the welfare losers who are bankrupting the company, he is a contractor on the government dole.  He also railed against the likes of the Department of Energy.

I guess, "Keep the government off my Medicare" is alive and well.

I've notice the same kind of things too. That the people most outspoken on self sufficiently and against the government - for example this 20 something kid I know - are often the ones most clueless - as in he is still living off his parents, who paid for his public school, public college, and live off the government themselves.  He just doesn't see it at all.

And another one of my friend seriously asked me if Obama was a communist.  This guy is under 40 and has live off social security for more than the last 5 years. As has his girlfriend who also lives off social security.  They have no problem with it.

Somehow they hate government waste, while they, relatively healthy and could work, don't see that they are the very thing they hate.

And remember "Don't cut Medicare for Socialized Medicine!"

Those in your example are hypocrites, but everyone on Medicare paid into it. Socialized medicine would give "free" health care to those who don't pay into it while those who do pay end up paying for those who don't. It's not the same thing. Medicare is not the same thing as socialized medicine. It's a fallacy to compare them. It's like comparing social security and welfare. Social security is really insurance. You pay into it so when you retire if you who don't have enough real retirement money you have social security to fall back on because you paid into it for decades. Welfare is a check handed out to someone who doesn't work or pay into the system and it's paid for by those who do work and pay into the system. Social security has been twisted into paying for more than retired people who've paid for it, but it really was originally retirement insurance. Social medicine, like Welfare, is redistribution of wealth.
