Despite the story not being up to par compared to Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, I've actually found myself enjoying the single player mode more.
Why you ask?
Well Nintendo really outdid themselves with bonus content. The Paralogue levels and the DLC content really adds to the game's replayability and post-game playtime. And the added focus on relationships really makes the different Paralogue levels special in their own way.
But yes, I was also disappointed that magic was stripped of its depth. The magic triangle is gone, plus bonus damage against other races (Taguel should have been weak against fire, and Manaketes/Wyverns weak against Electricity) was gone as well.
And yes, Dark Magic is completely overpowered. Perfect for Tharja...
