Well no because Metal Gear Solid replaces and adds onto the original Metal Gear Games. If they continued making Metal Gear games, then MGS would be a different series, but they don't. Metal Gear Solid continues on what Metal Gear started, and expands on it.
Metal Gear Solid is to Metal Gear, what Super Mario 3D Platformers are to Super Mario Bros. It's the same series.
You yourself are admitting this in the bold when you say Metal Gear Rising will be its own series (to me it already is it's own game).
As for your example on Resident Evil, Code Veronica is technically a main series game, but it's not a main entry. You can skip Resident Evil CV and not be missing out on any story from RE 0-6. The events in CV are an isolated event. I haven't played Revelations yet, but I think it's the same. This would be similar to RE: Dead Aim, except the characters in CV appear in other RE games.
So like Rising, CV is not a main Resident Evil game. When they eventually do release a MGS6, the events in MGR will have little weight to the story, if any.

Metal Gear Solid adds and replaces? Dude do you know the definition of a sequel? LOL - If they had continued to make Metal Gear without the "Solid" in the name it would be the same game we know - they just decided to go with the Solid moniker because the emphasis of the character itself or maybe its cause of the transition from 2D to full fledged 3D I dont know lol.
Anyways Metal Gear Solid is a sequel to Metal Gear and is a sub series to the Metal Gear Series - however it isnt its own standalone series. When I said that Rising will be its own series, I meant it as sub series and again it wont be a standalone series either - it doesnt take place on its own universe , it takes place 4 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4 as stated here: The game stars Raiden and it is set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Also in relation to the first Solid game: It is the third canonical title released in the Metal Gear series, being a direct sequel to Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

Also you cant use Mario as an example especially 3D Mario - if anything the storylines do not interact with each other and if they did 2D Mario (non-NSMB - it is debatable but I'm not even gonna bother cause the Mario series isnt storyline influenced as the Zelda series which has been more broken in the last few years until recently) and 3D mario would be the same universe and separated from Mario RPG (all 3), Mario Party, Mario Sports, etc.
Anyways a better example would of been the FF series where FFVII having its own sub series and being a standalone with its prequels and sequels since it doesnt relate to the other games in the series or its spinoffs storyline wise (unless you are one of those people who conspire that FFX takes place in the same universe as FFVII but that is a different discussion altogether).
About RE its w/e I have yet to play the game - I'm just going by what is considered canon (which was my main point) and that is how majority of people play their games in exact order. The same thing with MGR, I wouldnt play it if you havent played any of the MG games cause again you probably wont know some of the things that happen in the game like for an example you wont know how the main character is like especially his current personality (cause he's different in MGS2) if you havent played MGS4.
My whole point is people just love to disregard what is canon because it plays differently lol. It plays differently because its given to another team - the vision is the same especially since Kojima Productions worked hand to hand with Platinum games.
Your last comment - for all we know it will be true because....any MGS game that they make now will be a prequel (unless someone who's played the series can clarify) more than likely and any more MGR sequels they make will be the true sequels to the MG universe. Ground Zeros is already considered as a prequel since it takes place after Peace Walker.

Not all of Metal Gear Solid acts as a sequel to Metal Gear. MGS3 and Peace Walker are prequels. Metal Gear Solid expands upon Metal Gear, it's the same series and the plots directly overlap.
I think "Solid" was added because of the drastic change in gameplay from 2D to 3D.
"Revengence" was added to emphasis a very style of gameplay and game. You can't look at MGR as a MGS game, that's what I'm saying, how can you argue that?
I don't care what you call it, a canon or a sidestory, it's not a main series MGS game. Do you consider Metal Gear Ac!d a main series Metal Gear game? No, and this isn't either. I know it affects the plot more then say Resident Evil CV, but it's still not a steath game like MGS is known for. This is Halo Wars to Halo, the plot is still relevant, but it's not a main series entry.
It doesn't matter if you played MGS2 or 4, you'll pick up the plot in rising just fine. It's all about slashing.
