Have nintendo really lost the casuals?

Nope, they said they wanted both audiences. They noticed they repelled the core audience away with the Wii so they tried to get both audiences with the Wii U audience and tried to expand the market to lure in tablet and cellphone casuals. It was a huge risk and it did not pay off, especially since their graphics will be far behind the competition when the PS4 and 720 (or Infinity) come out. Casuals aren't going to come in droves back to Nintendo and buy a nunchuck already just for a Wii fit U. They only cared about the Nunchuck/Board gimmick. Microsoft is going to get that crowd with the Kinect, because its essentially a step up to the Kinect, so they can relate to it and it will still be the centerpiece of the living room.

We'll see how it works out for Nintendo. As long as they offer casual games they will get the casuals. 

Ok sure...they need a gimmick that the casuals havent tried yet. The Wii U is a more complex gaming tablet with intergrated features. Casuals want simple, then they want games. The Wii gave them that and Nintendo made that a secondary option instead of making the Wii U the Wii HD.
