The gameplay is more than solid and the cutting technique is both fresh and fun. The only complaint I have is the plot is nonsense and the writing is nothing but exposition. But that is the very definition of Metal Gear story telling. It may be nonsense but it makes about as much sense as any MGS I've played. Well except for the first MGS, that almost made sense. I've read three reviews for MGR:R and they have all been very positive and match up with what I felt about the demo. I'll have to read this Playstation Lifestyle review just to see a differing opinion, but since I've never heard of the website before I find the situation very dubious. Is it even a legit website or is it just some dude's blog that desperately wants to be a legit website? |
It's too bad you don't understand the story of MGS 2-4. You probably didn't pay enough attention on your first playthrough. Everything that happened had a reason. Try reading the plot summaries on the wiki pages.

Oh, I paid attention and I understood what happened and why, but it's all just goofy nonsense. Tying it all together with MGS4 doesn't make it all less silly. If any MGS was made into a movie critics would laugh their asses off at the exposition and leave completely dumfounded. Kojima seems to love goofy melodramatic themes as well as characters whose purpose are to give long monologues about tragedy, regret and the meaning of war. None of it would be taken seriously in a movie. But some reason gamers don't just let stuff like that slide, they defend it as better story telling than Hollywood. It's not.
Vulcan Raven. Vamp. The Pain. Lady Luck. The End. Liquid-Ocelot. Beauty and the Beast Unit. GW. The list of cheese goes on and on. It's not that it can't be understood. It's that it is nonsensical.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying there is anything bad about being as incredibly cheesy as MGS is. I love cheesy movies and games. I love B-Movies. I often tell my friends that I like my movies like I like my nachos, which extra cheese. The original MGS is one of my favorite games of all time. I like it for being cheesy as much as I like it for taking itself seriously. With that said I've liked each sequel less, but that's a different topic. I just find it interesting that people defend the plot of the series as if it were War and Peace. Metal Gear Solid has always been a video game parallel to the b-movie genre. Solid Snake is to video games as Snake Pliskin is to movies. It should be enjoyed for what it is and not be taken as seriously as even a Tom Clancy novel.

No sense =/= nonsense. Try to be clearer next time.
As for the cheesiness, that's fine by me. In fact, that WAS the intention for various parts of the story. This is why I love MGS but hate games like Splinter Cell, which take themselves way too damn seriously. MGS is at foremost a GAME and should be treated as such. Looking it at this way, I see a game with a brilliant take on the stealth genre. It's new and refreshing, both plot and gameplay, which is why I praise the game for all that it has accomplished in a span of 4-8 games (depending on if you played the original MG1 and MG2 and the PSP games). I get that you think some gamers take it too seriously. As for me, the plot shone of brilliance with parts such as the dramatic conclusion of MGS3 and the sacrifice that The Boss made to save her country, while also making me laugh with Johnny turning out as a major character from MGS1 (he was also in 2 and 3, if you didn't know). It's these kind of things that actually make me understand the love for this series. You say movie critics would laugh at the plot for this series, but in my opinion, that is one of its greatest strengths as a video game.

Yep, you like it for all the right reasons. I wish more MGS fans where like you. Unfortunetly most of the time if you dare to critisis MGS or suggest that MGR:R deserves it's own respect the MGS community tends to take it pretty badly.

i gree I think it is awesome that some plots that would be not grate as movies in the traditinal sense can make some of the best game plots for awesome games like for example Ninja Gaiden seires would be a odd plot for a movie but works just right or the games.
and yes MGR esrves its on place in gameing alongside MGS.
