But see, that's one of the main problems with your threads. You haven't finished or extensively played many of the games you like to be vocal about. At times you aren't talking so much about the games themselves, but their image among the gamer community.

Yes, I said that Nintendo should create new worlds and increase the production values, but that never meant that I would stop buying and playing the games, if they kept being stuck at about the same level and only made baby steps. Production values are not something I really care about personally (as most people should know, I am advocating that Nintendo should rethink the way they produce Zelda, because it's hurting the company), but since Super Mario Bros. is a true flagship series, more bells and whistles could not only increase the game's sales, but also hardware sales, because it could appeal to those people that put more stock into production values.

I don't recall that I changed my attitude regarding worlds. The reason why I have to be blunt in your threads is because you continue to call NSMB games cash-ins and are dismissive of all people who like these games. In this thread specifically, you are saying that people who like NSMB games are not true Mario fans. That's the tone you wanted to go along with and it obviously shaped the responses this thread would get.

Your final paragraph contains a contradiction. You have already admitted that you couldn't get into SMG2, so your claim that you still love what Mario stands for in his 3D iterations doesn't make sense (along with your complaint about cheesy voice acting which is a trademark of the 3D games). The first response in this thread pretty much summed up the problem: You've become more cynical and that's not something that Nintendo can fix. The only solution is that you allow yourself to see games through a child's eyes again, if you want that magic from your childhood back.

Rol, please stop cherry-picking :( I told you that I didn't get into Galaxy 2, but notwithstanding that game, 3D Mario holds true to Mario's roots (M64, Sunshine, Galaxy). There are always outliers, but in general the trend is still alive. Also Galaxy 2 is the very last entry in the series and is a rare "sequel" to a 3D Mario game, I expect Mario to reinvent itself for the next iteration.

I was just about to give up replying, but you put thought into this post so I'm going to follow.

I think I misunderstood you. I thought you were calling for better production value because you expected that from them, for a better enjoyment of the game. I didn't realize it was strictly a matter of sales.

The fundamental difference between you and I as Nintendo fans is that, you would buy the game so long as the gameplay is good. I will buy the game so long as it captivates my imagination. Gameplay, to me, is really secondary (EDIT: Actually they both have to be awesome). Just last week I was playing NSMB2 and beat the game, then played it almost through and through (lost my save point so I have to redo some levels...), it was lots of fun. But, it wasn't the Mario I grew up to, it didn't captivate me like old Mario did. I am more cynical, that is for sure, I won't argue that. But at the same time, there's a part of me that recognizes true captivating content, and it's something I see less and less of in the industry, and it makes me sad. To get a really compelling game for me, now, I need to dig really hard because it's honestly rare. The last game that really captivated me was Shadow of the Colossus, and that's a Sony game...

What I wanted to say was that, to me, a player that puts all emphasis on gameplay when it comes to Mario games missed the point. I was very upset when people made fun of the idea of people hoping for story or at least captivating worlds from Super Mario Bros. in your thread, I felt pretty insulted personally. In my understanding, Mario became the great series it is today due to that mystical charm it had when it was first made, and for people to make fun of that was really a sad thing for me. NSMB is the posterchild for those people, and it makes me sad. I appreciate the gameplay value that NSMB has, but for people to just give Nintendo a free pass just because and not put pressure and not say "hey, what about production value, what about story, what about atmosphere, what about music?" is something that makes me upset as an original Mario fan.
