Have them pair up, and then there is a spot that they can hide in on turn 1 that no enemy can reach.

They you just have to make sure you are sending your fastest and powerful characters towards them to be backup.

That's one thing I hate though about first getting new characters EARLY on in the game.  I mean Sumia, wtf am I supposed to do with her.  She is lvl 1.  No way I can use her on any enemy without her dying.  I have to hope I get an enemy to just like 1-4 hp left and then finish them off with her. 

The funny thing is I used chapter 3 exclusively to train her and her alone. Now she destroys everything.
