While it's tough to do straight comparisons, I don't think anyone would try and argue that you should pick Wii and friend codes for your online platform over Live and PSN.

For example, in Monster Hunter Tri, I don't remember having to exchange friend codes. I doubt it's different in DQ.

Iirc, in Tri, you could look up a user by username and play with him/them.

That's a vey bad comparison though. MH isn't like an MMO at all. You had a tavern where you could participate (which is just a single room) and you loaded a stage from there. This is nothing in there that makes a game a MMO.
