Professor Layton is merely published by Nintendo in the West, but the IP is owned by Level 5. It's not really a Nintendo franchise.

As for the big picture, Nintendo's first party games on the whole are pretty much okay, because they are able to justify their new price points. However, third party games aren't doing all that great. That's not really surprising though, considering an increase in software prices and the fact that third party games already had a hard enough time to justify their price points in the previous generation.

Layton is declining, but to be fair those sales have been declining since the first game.
