There are so many things different between that example and this one:
. It's not the same Nintendo as then, not the same management.
. Rare was Brittish, monolith is Japanese. The culture shock is lesser.
. Rare was a wild horse, it's a surprise Nintendo got them to work on their franchises for so long. The strain between Dino Planet's direction and Nintendo's direction, the need to do something totally not Nintendo (Conker) made it a stretch for the traditional Nintendo I'm sure.
. Monolith is working on its own IPs, and always has. Nintendo hasn't meddled as much as with Rare as I understand it.
It's just too different to compare like that, but with the relationship increasing, the odds of there being more tension also increases.
