The problem with this premise is the Wii didn't need great graphics because the controller was a huge difference from anything else on the market and took off with casuals and non-gamers like wild fire. At that time things like Kinect, the iPhone, Facebook gaming, etc. did not exist.

Things like Wii Sports and Wii Fit which really drove Wii sales didn't even need GameCube level graphics.

The Wii U does not have the luxury of such a wildly popular controller to sell the system basically on its own to new audiences.

Without that casual audience and without third party support, the system is basically just a "Nintendo machine" for people who like Nintendo franchises and that's it.
