Andy Serkis' mocap studio are world leaders, from the source of the story you linked BTW
"James Cameron saw the potential of performance capture when, following a visit to Ninja Theory shooting scenes for the visually stunning Heavenly Sword on location in New Zealand, Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings, showed him some of Ninja Theory’s tracking technology. Matthews, however, is swift to point out: “I don’t think we can claim any credit for inspiring Avatar."
So you could say that Avatar used some of the same staff and studio as Ninja Theory. Andy Serkis has a long history of working with Ninja Theory and they developed a lot of mocap tech together. Not cheap but really it's not like they haven't done the same on their last couple games, it's the same studio and crew they have been using it just so happens that big movies such as Avatar and Lord of the Rings also use the mocap studio, they just happen to have used the Avatar team and space after they were done with the film.
