As much as I hate to admit the nintendo fanbase has taken to changes a lot better than most any other franchises.
For instance, Metroid Prime, and 3D mario, Zelda: Wind Waker (with a lot more different artstyle than DMC (which I hate :P)), are generally excellently recieved despite being vastly different than their 2D counterparts.
