Aside from possibly not making the system a little bit stronger (although given how they were the first to commit to a release, there is no way to know how strong either Microsoft or Sony would have made their consoles once they heard of Nintendo's range) they failed to learn from their previous system launches and have software unique to the system that would grab people's attention.
Literally, the only title that came close to touching the Wii U's interactive potential and was exclusive available at launch was ZombiU, a title that while very good wouldn't appeal to everyone. Nintendo Land is a fun diversion for the family, but Nintendo Land isn't that much different from any other mini game collection. Scibblenauts Unlimited while better then the 3DS version, isn't that different other then bigger screens. Nintendo themselves failed to live up to the promise of the system early on and now they suffered for it because the system is turning into what the critics claimed it would be... a HD Wii. Granted with a awesome online market but Nintendo could and should have done better with the software releases.
