Well, they have to.

They cant honestly think that can keep winging it with Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable.

Well they could release random games like Sony that don't sell so they have to shut down studios and put people out of work. Go check out what Sony has left for first party studios and the games they release. You will be really surprised at what you find.

I still find more games worth playing on the Playstation 3 than the X360. And, i dont even have a PS3.

Again it is a prefrence. However if you look at sales you will see what people prefer. I am not going to turn this into a Xbox vs. PS thread, but for the 1,000th time it does not make any sense from a business standpoint to release random first party titles just so you can say we offer more content then the other guy. Sony is putting studios in a position to fail do to demand and lack of marketing. Here is the list for you of Sony's first party studios and the games/projects that mean anything. As of April 2012......

Evolution - MotorStorm

Guerilla Games - KillZone

Media Molecule - LittleBigPlanet

Naughty Dog - Uncharted and The Last of Us

Polyphony Digital - Gran Turismo

SCE Bend Studio - Uncharted Golden Abyss, Resistance: Retribution, and Syphon Filter (Handheld Studio Now)

SCE Cambridge Studio - LittleBigPlanet PSP and KillZone Vita (Handheld Studio)

SCE Japan Studio - The Last Guardian

SCE London Studio - PlayStation Home

SCE San Diego Studio - MLB The Show

SCE Santa Monica Studio - God of War

SCE Studio Liverpool - WipeOut

Sucker Punch Productions - Sly Cooper and Infamous

So there is this myth about Sony having all so many franchises and studios and all these new games all the time. Look at that list and remove the London studio and the two handeld makers. That leaves 10 studios. Here are the games.

MtoroStorm

KillZone

LittleBigPlanet

Uncharted

The Last of Us

Gran Turismo

The Last Gaurdian

MLB The Show

God of War

WipeOut

Sly Cooper

Infamous

That leaves you with 12 games and 3 of those franchises the majority doesn;t gives a rats ass about anymore. So it is the same old franchises coming from Sony with 1 new IP. All of Son'ys "NEW" stuff comes from 3rd party people like Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and Ni NO Kuni. Other than that Sony is no different than Microsoft and it all comes down to prefrence.

If your point here is the microsoft ones sell more even though less in number, it is true. But, how long can you handle the same game repackaged? At last theres variety on the Sony system.

But you selectively left out more niche and amazing titles like journey and unfinished swan.

Also, no one gives a rats arse about God of War? I think not. :)

Did I bold God of War? No I didn't. Sly Cooper, WipeOut, and MotorStorm are the ones I did and the majority don't care about those titles. How can you use Journey and Unfinished Swan when they are not first party titles?

The point is this. The theory that Microsoft needs more first party IP's to survive or be successful next gen is ridiculous. So I showed what Sony offeres as far as first party goes and it is no different than the yearly stuff Microsoft releases. The difference is Sony releases stuff from Japanees studios where Microsoft has no pull. However it goes back to my point of profits compared to a dick measuring contest on the internet about the amount of exclsuives a company has.

Both companies have a different business approach. Sony is stuck in the 90's mentality of releasing new games all the time. However unlike in the PS1 and PS2 era's the landscape of gaming is chaging. It isn't about the "Hardcore" gamer anymore. This site gets sales on the regular and if you look past certain fan boys of either side trying to spin the sales reports you can see how it doesn't make sense for a company to release a game like Starhawk, let it sell 200,000 copies, and claim we have more games.

If Microsoft wanted to they could send out a ton of franchises, invest a ton of money in them, and let them die. But hey at least they will please the minority of internet fan boys so they can claim to the Sony army that we have more games then them.
