I have the feeling the biggest competition of the new console will be their predecessors.

 

The problem is that for publishers and devs it will be hard to just ignore a 140m install base, and considering how high development cost are this decision will be even harder to make. This next gen transition will take longer than previous ones imo.

According to Kowenicki the people are ready to pounce on new technology by evidence of (better than he expected) sales of console. Since they are so antsy for new technology they are turning to the ps2.
