As for the Gameboy being hardy. It's probably because it was made to travel. However, at the same time, consoles had to be made (at least in the past) in mind that there were lots of cords connecting it to the TV, and from your controller to the console, so it could very well be physically damaged by falling off of wherever you put it when you played it.
