Yes and no. Overall sales are typical of a new console.
However sales in Europe are poor and this last week's sales were very concerning, or will be if they continue at that level.
In general WiiU has been met with utter indifference by the marketplace, and so everyone is waiting and watching to see what happens once the early adopters and fanboys have finished buying up systems.
As for the press - they are their to tell stories that attraction attention, drive hits and therefore generate advertising $$. Saying WiiU sales are 'typical' doesn't get anyone any pageviews.
