For the same reasons every other company is in New York. Prestige. Access to worldwide travel. Infrastructure. Proximity to other multinationals, media, legal and financial services. 

Also four Japanese carmakers I looked up were headquartered in CA. Nissan wasn't, but it still had major offices in CA and NY.

sone is (was) a household name.... they dont need prestige.

Maybe im thinking factory not HQ lol
