Metal Gear Solid is the major franchise that got people to focus on the more serious side of games with political warfare undertones and risky infiltration situations, sure there were some quips (as I said before). Never before had a console game had that level of production value of story and Kojima set a standard not just for the east to catch up with but also the west. 2. I get that now, and thats what hurts the credibility of it even more. Kojima didnt write the script or even co write it, so this worries me. I dont like anything that is serious being put in the hands of Platinum Games. I've never taken that company seriously outside of their wacky arcade style gameplay mechanics. I was perfectly fine when they said it was a spin-off, but looking at that wacky shit it looks nothing like nothing in the MG universe. 3. I know Kojima picked Platinum Games. As I said before, he was forced to because he let his team do this project and stepped back into a supervisor position rather than director, while he supervised other Konami titles like Castlevania to make sure to production level and quality was high. His team failed him without his director status and he publically humiliated them by making a video package that clearly separated him from his team. MGS5 looks like its on its way, and I will play Reveangence but I wont take it seriously at all. Can't wait for some post cold war action in MGS5 the story looks tense. I need to play MGS: Peacewalker, its been on my HDD on my PS3 for a while. |
Are you telling me you take a game with cartoon punctuation above character's heads seriously? A series with a villain that "meows" like a kitty cat to call for backup. A series with long melodramatic rambo-a-like reflections on the meaning of war. A franchise with character names like Solidus Snake, The Sarrow, and a group called the Beauty and the Beast Corps. Do you really consider Metal Gear games to be above B-Grade? Take any game in the series and make it into a movie and it would get panned by critics as incomprehensible schlock. I like schlock, I collect schlock, and MGS is schlock. The difference between MGS and Escape from New York is that fans of the latter know it's a B-Grade and love it for it. Some fans of MGS seem to think that it's the highest form of art there is. As a fan of Metal Gear games I enjoy it for what it is. An over the top, sometimes lol wtf cartoon, sci-fi action thriller with ridicules characters and b-movie settings.
I think Kojima does it on purpose. There's no way a game serious could be as cheesy as Metal Gear by accident. The fact that he took the main character's name from Escape from New York says that Kojima enjoys b-movies so it makes sense that his movie marathon length games would pay homage to that schlock he loves. That same schlock that keeps me coming back to MGS for the same reason I sat in a theater this past weekend and enjoyed eating popcorn and drinking soda while watching Gangster Squad.
So, stop kidding yourself. MGS is not high art. MGR isn't cheesier than MGS, it's just more upfront about it. Enjoy it for what it is, deal with what it means that you like it, and get comfortable with the fact that you, like I do, seem to like games with extra cheese.
