I find it funny that many people know that  Wii Fit U or a Wii U sports game, will actually sell more systems, when clearly those are not games Nintendo fans  look foward to.

Problem is appealing to Nintendo fans don't sell a ton of systems.  See Gamecube.

But for Nintendo fans, being on top saleswise hasn't provided more of the games they cherish. See Wii.

Considering Wii Fit U coming and NSMBU already being on Wii U, I wouldn't exactly say that would hold true.
However, considering the TGS showing, where Wii Remote was unveiled, Nintendo did surprisingly small amount of games that they "promised" with their trailer. In the end, Wii Sports buyers were pretty much left alone after the purchase.
