For real, I think the word "gimmick" is thrown around too much. Playing video games is about having fun. A lot of the time, what people are calling "gimmicks" contribute to a person having fun. The Wii U gamepad definitely changes how you play a game, while at the same time can keep it simple and the same.
So in my opinion, even if it is a "gimmick," it shouldn't be used as a reason to attack the Wii U.

Yeah I understand and I wasn't attacking the Wii U or anything :p
But I use the word gimick because when I have to do something using a new hardware feature that I could just have easily done with the press of a button, it feels extremely forced. I think it all comes down to feeling natural. Like, if they made a new Pokemon Snap game (please God!) and you used the tablet or 3DS to actually move around the camera I think that would feel very natural and would be a great way to experience that game.
But like I said I don't have a Wii U but i've been burned by other such features and touchscreens always feel more annoying to use than a standard controller. Especially for gaming. I'll eventually get one and hopefully i'll be pleasantly surprised.

You still have all the same buttons as a normal controller, so it's not like you're replacing button actions with a gimmick. Interacting with the world map and selecting inventory items on a touch screen is a definite plus, as is playing the game on the gamepad while the TV is in use. Also, you can opt for the pro controller on most games and not even worry about the screen if you don't like it. I've played a bit of NSMBU, AC3 and Batman Arkham City on the gamepad while the wife was watching TV... that alone is awesome. Once I get a pair of TriOrvis 3d glasses I will be able to play AC3 in 3d... on the gamepad... without having to hog the TV all the time... yes.

Yeah I see what you mean, and god that Pro controller is so comfortable I love it! I think the problem I have is more of a personal one and the negatives I associate with touchscreens that come from other bad experiences, not neccesarrily from Nintendo. I'll definitely be getting a Wii U eventually and I'll just have to give it an honest shot before I dismiss it. But like you said, there's always the Pro controller if all else fails :]
