Wii U had a decent first 10 days in North America with 400k+ sold or so, but only 460k sold for all of December with a new Mario and supply still available on storeshelves in many areas should be setting off alarm bells at Nintendo.

That is worse than the Playstation 3 did at $500/$600 its first December. Comparing to the 360 is a misnomer because really MS was launching a 2006 product rushed for the end of 2005 and didn't have any inventory to sell.

Wii U is also probably the first Nintendo system in a long time to fail to cross 1 million+ through its first holiday season in the US.

N64 - 1.8 million (approx) sold through Dec. 31st, 1996

GameCube - 1.23 million sold through Dec. 31st, 2001

Wii - 1.08 million sold through Dec. 31st, 2006 (completely sold out)

Wii U - 885,000 (approx) sold through Dec. 31st, 2012
