Not true. You only need to look at sales figures to see this:

Looks like the PS3 was far more successful than the 360 to me. The figure for the PS1 is somewhat harder to find (naturally), but http://scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps_e.html">this would suggest it was also in the region of 1-1.2mil. Again, the PS3 would have outsold it.
Finally, let's look at this here, which would suggest the GameCube sold around 3mil in its first year, again excluding Europe. So it's quite clear that the PS3 launch WAS a good one, and that the GameCube teaches us the first year of sales mean absolutely nothing in the long run.
