Five of my friends who bought launch PS3's replaced them after they got the yellow light of death. Two of them bought replacment fats because Sony's warrenty was out, one of which stopped reading discs and he had a friend replace the drive. The other two bought Slim PS3 because their warrenty was up, their Slims are still working.
My launch 360 was still working when I sold it to get the Halo 4 Limited Edition 360. My brother's launch 360 got the RROD and MS replaced it for free. Two of my friends got RROD and free replacements more than once and 3 of my friends still have thier original Xbox 360 Elites.
From what I've seen, in real life, the PS3 Fat isn't all that more reliable than the launch 360. The Slim PS3 and Xbox 360 are pretty damn reliable and a lot better than the original versions. That's what I've seen with my own eyes.
