Who or what is in your avatar?

So, a lot of you have very nice avatars, drawn from a range of media, and it would be nice if you could briefly describe what is in your avatar, and why you chose it.

 

As of 5th January 2013, my avatar is Balerion, Aegon the Conqueror's dragon from A Song of Ice and Fire. I chose it because dragons are awesome, and Balerion is widely acknowledged to be the greatest dragon ever to live, and because ASOIAF has quickly become one of my favourite novel series of all time.

Is balerion widely acknowledged to be the greatest dragon though?  Dragons are so mysterious and rare in that series, freak, they only talk about six of them.  Perhaps he is the best dragon that they know of?  Anyway, sucks that we have to wait another 6 years or so for the next book, if history is any indication...  Also, have you ever read the kingkiller chronicles?  There only two books so far, but that series is pretty freaking awesome too!

as far as my avatar, its concept art from dragon age.  Morrigon and an ogre i believe.  Havent changed it in a long time...

Okay, the greatest dragon in Westeros since, you're right, Valyria probably had some really enormous dragons, and Aegon is the one who first brought dragons to Westeros.

Dance with Dragons took unusually long because he got into a knot trying to figure out how Daenerys was supposed to leave Meereen. (A Dance with Dragons spoiler). And he took a fair bit of it (150 page or so I believe) and put them into Winds of Winter, so fingers crossed it'll be out within a couple of years. Plus he has the pressure from the HBO show, which he doesn't want to overtake him.

I have read Kingkiller, yes, and it's an enormously different style of book, but I love that too. I'm currently trying to work my way through the obnoxiously long Wheel of Time series; I'm on book 10 out of 14. That's more similar political fantasy, especially later in the series.
