I had a similar problem as you when I got my Christmas present. A 3TB external HDD.
Most TVs don't recognize HDDs over 2TB. The reason for that might be that they don't use Master Boot Record as boot sector, they need the GUID Partition Table which is not supported by many older hardware or else you can only use 2TB of the 3TB.
So make sure your HDD is a Master Boot Record (right click on Computer shortcut, Manage, Disk Management, right click on your HDD and select properties, then on Volume). Then make sure it's FAT32 formatted (you can see that on Computer or the Disk Management) if you want to use it with any hardware other than the PC. My TV accepts NTFS, but obviously the Xbox doesn't and many older products don't support that either.
If it is GUID Partition Table then convert it to Master Boot Record and try it again on your TV without formatting to FAT32. Could save you a lot of work. If it still doesn't work then go on to format it.
You can use the FAT32 Formatter though I already had some problems with it. Better go for the Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
It's freeware and has a nice GUI with a few more options than the FAT32 Formatter.
End of my story, I swapped an internal 2TB with the 3TB external and everything worked fine.
Also consider downloading an update for your TV and install it via a flash drive.
And even better read or download and then read the manual for your TV. You should then know what media types it can play and how the HDD need to be to be recognized by the TV.
