Super Mario 3 is the clear winner. This one not only came before World, but had superior level design and was way more fun and satisfying.
New Super Mario Bros U is better than World as well, but not for its time, so I will tie them. World is definitely more geared to children than the other 2D Mario games - unless you include the Yoshi games.
Super Mario 1 is next.
New Super Mario Bros Wii is better than 1, but has a lot of problems and lacks the 8-bit charm.
Super Mario 2 in last.
