I have the most fond memories of Sonic 2 because it came with my Genesis. But I think Sonic 3 might be slightly better. I've never been a huge fan of Sonic CD because it confused me and I got lost flipping between time zones. The first Sonic is still really great in the same way that the original Super Mario Bros. is. It's simple and gets everything right. Sonic 2 added the spin dash and upgraded everything else.
I guess I'll go with Sonic 2 for due to the nostalgia factor.
BTW, Sonic 1 and 2 for the Master System are really good games. So are Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic Chaos.
