Squilliam said: My take: The Wii U is selling as good as many other launches of supply constrained consoles and it can only be judged like for like compared to other consoles with a similar supply situation. We don't know for instance if Nintendo had say twice the supply of the Wii that it would have sold twice as much as the Wii U or if the Wii would have simply sold 5% more. All we know is the upper bounds on demand and not the demand compared to other consoles. |
Given that the Wii was sold out basically through 2007 and still relatively tough to find even in 2008, I would say its fair to assume that Nintendo perhaps could've sold double the Wii systems in 2006 that they had at launch.

I would hesitate to just assume a doubling of the sales. Part of the reason why the Wii was so popular was the fact it was always sold out which added to the hype about the product.

True. The Wii was also the ultimate word of mouth gaming product, one person got it, invited friends/family over, then they suddenly knew all about it and had to have one, rinse, wash, repeat for about 2 years there, it just kept snowballing bigger and bigger.
